Hi, my name is Cathy Van Onselen. I grew up in a middle-class family. My dad served as a policeman and my mom worked as a secretary for a major auditing firm. We were not poor, but there was no money for luxuries, nor did I have the privilege to go to university. Once I matriculated I finished a gap year before joining the rat race of a 'normal' 9 - 5 job. After serving 14 years in the South African Police Service my personal circumstances changed and it forced me to work from home. Initially, I felt excited about being my own boss, but I soon found that working for myself meant that I had to work seven days a week, from eight in the morning until I fainted. I battled selling beauty and wellness products, and my home business was severely hit when COVID came knocking on our doors in March 2020. With the uncertain economy in South Africa, it dawned on me that no one's pension is safe and that I would have to take care of my elderly parents. I've exhausted just about every single option known to me to take care of my parents' needs as well as my own, as life has become more and more expensive.I was just about at the end of my rope when I found a major company that is JSE listed - a company that lends a helping hand to average South Africans like you and me. And I thought.... after losing literally THOUSANDS of Rands to 'opportunities' which promised me the moon and the stars, what do I have to lose if I join this company?
